Hello! My name is Paige Deathe and thank you for visiting my portfolio. As you can see by the Graduate Coursework and Resume, my path to getting my Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction has been a long road with a few curves, or major life changes along the way! However, each of these experiences has been beneficial in helping me reach my ultimate goal of teaching and finishing my Master's Degree where I've picked up on the importance of persistence, leadership, and teamwork.
I began taking Master level coursework my senior year of college to potentially be endorsed for ESOL, however, that never panned out. The following year, I completed my student teaching and internship at Perry Lecompton High School and Liberty Memorial Central Middle School where I was able to finally practice my years of education in teaching! At Liberty Memorial Central Middle School, I was a member of the PDS program where I also conducted action research. Each of the experiences were gratifying and I learned so much about the dedication and countless hours that teachers dedicate their lives to.
During student teaching, I was also busy planning a wedding for July 2012 (I have a reoccurring theme to fill my plate). I married my longtime sweetheart, Dustin, on a steamy 104 degree day at Danforth Chapel on the KU Campus! Although I wasn't able to secure a teaching job immediately, I began working at the University of Kansas Math and Science Center (KUMSC) as an Academic Advisor in January 2013. I had worked for KUMSC throughout my time as an undergraduate in a variety of roles such as tutoring, summer course instructor, and resident assistant. I was grateful for the opportunity to continue working with students who dreamed of going to college in such a unique setting.
Since I only had a few classes left to finish my Master's Degree, I took night classes to fulfill the requirements. Being in classes with other teachers made me realize I missed the daily interaction with students in the classroom. A fellow student teacher I became friends with informed me of a teaching opportunity at Tonganoxie Middle School that I couldn't pass up. I found out I got the job in April and then a few weeks later I had my precious son, Porter! Being a parent also changed my life in ways I never could have imagined! The worry and stress I get about students in the classroom has been magnified by 100 (or more)!
Knowing I was so close to completing my degree, I took Dr. O'Brien's summer class in June 2014 and have since had my portfolio left to finish. My first year of teaching was fun, stressful, crazy, and a whirlwind experience! The relationship building piece was crucial to fostering a positive classroom environment. I'm excited to use my knowledge gained throughout my courses to enhance my lessons and improve student achievement.
