During the C&T 762 course, I was also working with the KU Math and Science Center and thought the "Tracking a Contemporary Issue" assignment related well to my work. One of the primary issues with attending college is the debt that students accumulate. I felt there was a high need to educate students on the price of college and what student debt actually was.
The project would've been completed during the Summer Institute where students take courses for five weeks. This activity introduces student debt with political cartoons, uses graphs to show the changes, looks at the historical background of college & student loans, and takes a look at the future for student loans. The final part of the project is to research a career they are interested in and what is the education necessary while also researching the cost of the colleges they'd like to attend. This assignment could easily be used in a school setting as well, particularly for juniors and seniors who are in the college search and admissions process. |
